The Sense of Touch

Reference Type:
Artwork
Year:
c. 1615-16
Notes/Description:
This work is part of a series based on the five senses. The blind man here experiences the ancient-style bust with his fingers rather than his eyes. It is most likely a plaster replica since a solid marble work would have been much too heavy for him to balance on the upraised arm. Sitting behind him on the table is a painting, reminding viewers that touch cannot experience everything in the world of visual art. Notes by Mariann Smith
