Notes/Description:
This is the last of eight works in a series that follows young heir Tom Rakewell to his ruin after a life of irresponsibility and debauchery. He ends up in Bethlem Royal Hospital for the poor and insane, surrounded by numerous inmates suffering delusions. The two well-dressed women in the background are not inmates, but part of the general public who, as was the case with the real-life Bethlem, could pay to view the lunatics inside like they would animals in a zoo.
