Notes/Description:
Arnold Böcklin was a Swiss symbolist painter obsessed with tragedies such as death, war, and plague. Here, Death rides on the back of a wild winged creature with a wide open mouth that deals out devastation alongside Death’s traditional scythe. In the foreground, the white figure has died and the woman in the red dress mourns. In the background some figures seem to be dead while others try to run away from the rampant tragedy.
