A major affiliate of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo General offers medical treatment in a wide spectrum of clinical inpatient departments and outpatient programs. Specialized programs include cardiac and orthopedic surgery; lithotripsy and urology; psychiatry, gynecology/obstetrics; dialysis; gastroenterology; cardiac rehabilitation; rehabilitation medicine; kidney and pancreas transplantation, neurology and neurosurgery.

The Women & Children's Hospital is the Western New York regional center for specialized pediatric care and women's health services. Children's Hospital is also committed to continuing medical education as the only pediatric teaching hospital for the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

It is the main referral center for cardiac surgery, cardiology and comprehensive cancer care for Central and Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania. The VAWNYHS is academically affiliated with the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
