Pain Management Anesthesiology Fellowship

The University at Buffalo Department of Anesthesiology offers an American Board of Anesthesiology approved fellowship program in Pain Management. Erie County Medical Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, and the VA Medical Center offer a wide exposure to acute and chronic pain. Erie County Medical Center provides a high census of chronic, benign and post-surgical pain patients. Roswell Park Cancer Institute offers management of cancer pain, palliative care and research opportunities in the post-surgical and out-patient settings.

The Pain fellow (trainee) participates in all the above routines, while one day per week is assigned for research. The fellow assists the attending in the training of pain residents and is required to submit at least one case report or one review article during his/her year. Fellows may participate in selected clinical trials. Basic research experienceis also available. Research is supervised by Oscar deLeon-Casasola, M.D. Four months of intensive cancer pain management training is provided at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. For special projects, procedures, or conferences, the fellow is able to participate at any institution on short notice.

Fellows who complete one year of training in Pain Management are eligible to take the American Board of Anesthesiology special certifying examination in Pain Management provided they have previously become board certified anesthesiologists.
