Introduction
The University at Buffalo Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Program is a one- to two-year multidisciplinary training program designed to allow the individual maximal exposure to the clinical, research, administrative, and teaching opportunities in the field of cardiothoracic anesthesiology. Board certified anesthesiologists with either fellowship training in cardiothoracic and/or pediatric anesthesia or its clinical equivalent, and board certified cardiologists and echocardiologists comprise the faculty component of the program. All have active participation in the training of the cardiothoracic fellows. Although not subject to Board certification, this subspecialty is recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiology.
Summary
The first fellowship year consists of clinical experience in cardiothoracic anesthesiology with involvement in available clinical research projects. Clinical training will include exposure to echocardiography, cardiology lab-based as well as intraoperative echo studies, with the goal of perioperative TEE certification through the National Board of Echocardiography. The fellow will be an integral member of the cardiac anesthesia team involved in the varied aspects of adult and pediatric clinical care. The second optional year centers on laboratory and/or clinical research and teaching. Training for both years is conducted at the Kaleida Healthcare System, including the Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, and the Western New York VA Healthcare System. At the successful completion of the fellowship, fellows will have achieved the following goals:
1) the safe and skillful management of complicated cardiac and thoracic surgical patients, including proficiency in intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, and
2) the completion of a research project in abstract and/or manuscript form and presentation at a national meeting.
