In response to safety
concerns, the following plan will go into effect
at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on Monday, January 14,
2002:
All doors will be
locked from 6pm-7am Monday-Friday with one main
entrance to the Medical Complex. The main entrance will be on the first
floor of Sherman Hall, directly across from the Sherman Parking Lot;
handicap access will be available at the ground level. Doors equipped
with swipe card systems will continue to be active 24/7 for entry while
exit from any door will still be possible.
From 6pm-1am each
night, two security aides will monitor the main
entrance and conduct rounds of the buildings. All people entering the
facility will be required to present a UB ID and sign-in. Departments
or programs expecting visitors must provide a list of names and date(s)
at least two days in advance to the Security Office at 125 Sherman
Hall. Visitors will be required to present an ID and sign-in and out of
the building. These aides will be available for escorts to the parking
lot upon request.
On weekends, all doors
to the Medical Complex will be locked except for
the main entrance. The Sherman entrance will be open from 6am-1am and
sign-in procedures will be the same as outlined above.
Propping doors for
any reason is strictly prohibited and will compromise
safety and security. For this reason, doors will be alarmed to sound
if propped open. Security Aides and University Officers will assist in
maintaining the integrity of doors while on rounds by discarding
material used to prop doors.
We appreciate your
cooperation in helping this plan work effectively.
We understand that there may be minor inconveniences as we get
accustomed to the new system, but the end result will be a safer campus.
Future plans include
a task force of SMBS constituents, the "SMBS Safety
and Security Group", who will meet for the first time in February
to
review the new security measures and make recommendations about future
safety enhancements. In addition, the University's Department of Public
Safety will help us implement a "Building Watch" program, analogous
to
the "Neighborhood Watch" program you may already have in your
own
community at home.
